How to ease the Importation/Exportation transportation Stress: The Barge Option
Nigeria’s seaports are rated as one of the most expensive seaports in West Africa. This is judging by the fact that a lot of import cargoes spend a long time before getting the needed clearance to move them to their respective warehouses. This results in payment of high demurrage charges to shipping companies and charges to terminal owners for not taking delivery of their cargoes as at when due.
This challenge can be largely attributed to the loop that is widely spreading in government agencies such as customs. Sometimes, a cargo can stay for between 20 to 60 days or more at the ports. This is largely caused by operational delays caused by human barrier element. Port officials need to determine the capacity of a particular port before receiving additional cargoes to avoid congestion.
There have been numerous discussions by various agencies on ways to further ease the gridlock on the Lagos Ports access roads, the effects on the ports, solution to the issue of empty containers and overtime cargoes that have taken up most of the terminals and how to maximize the use of barges to convey goods through the waters.
We have discussed about the importance of the use of barges in transporting cargoes in our previous articles, please read HERE. Barges can be said to be the ‘saviour’ of transportation at the ports since its inception. The benefits are numerous, some of which are significant reduction of time in the transportation of cargoes and possible losses or damage of cargoes. The use of barge has brought a lot of ease to importers as they can get their cargoes almost immediately after its arrival at the port at an affordable cost.
