Tackling Port Congestion – Introducing the Automated Call Up System

The Nigerian Port Authorities (NPA) is introducing something I would like to call the beginning of the end to the issues of congestion associated with ports in the country, most especially the ports in Lagos. The introduction of the Automated Call Up System is one step closer to resolving the problems that have not only affected the access to the ports but also affected the free flow of traffic in areas around the ports.

The Automated Call Up System uses an interactive voice response system. This form of technology initiates a connection between humans and machines. This system is projected to bring an end to the truck congestion as trucks would now be called upon at specific times that would be drawn from the call up system. Which means that there would be a routine call where each truck would only be allowed to access the roads at their given times.

Procurement officers and logistics personnel are very well aware of the struggles that come with accessing the ports in Lagos especially and also how long it takes to get cargoes in and out of the port. This considerably slows down the operations of a lot of businesses and organizations, which is why barge operations are the most welcome means of transporting cargoes to and from the ports to avoid the gridlock on the roads leading to the port.

Since the introduction of barges in Nigeria a few years back, there has been a slight improvement in the congestion situation, but this option is yet to be fully maximized. Most procurement officers are not really enlightened on barge operations. You can read more on the advantage the barge option provides in one of our previous posts here.
